Ermou Street

If you start at the top of Syntagma Square and walk down the steps and past the fountain, at the bottom of the square is the beginning of Ermou Street, a paradise for those who live to shop.

Ermou street is a commercial avenue which has been turned into a pedestrian only street. It is the primary clothing shopping street for Athens and contains many of the big international names like Benneton, Marks & Spencer, H&M, Zara, Berksha, Sephora, and a lot of other stores.

With fashion shops and shopping centres promoting most international brands, it is in the top five most expensive shopping streets in Europe, and the tenth most expensive retail street in the world.

Nearby, the renovated Army Fund building in Panepistimiou Street includes the “Attica” Department Store and several upmarket designer stores.

Mοnastiraki Flea Market

Monastiraki is a flea market neighborhood in the old town of Athens, Greece, and is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. The area is home to clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and specialty stores, and is a major tourist attraction in Athens and Attica for bargain shopping.

The area is named after Monastiraki Square, which in turn is named for the Church of the Pantanassa that is located within the square. The main streets of this area are Pandrossou Street and Adrianou Street.

The Monastiraki flea market is the place to be on Sunday when it seems every Athenian is here either buying or selling. It is basically full of small shops selling everything from tourist mementoes to sportswear and clothes.

Plaka

The Plaka is the oldest section of Athens. In the shadow of the Acropolis and its ancient temples, hillside Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics.

Most of the streets have been closed to automobile traffic. Sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late. Nearby, the whitewashed homes of the Anafiotika neighborhood give the small enclave a Greek-island vibe.
